Multipurpose Sports Centre in Utena

The complex tailored to various sports, cultural and other mass events was built in Utena next to a picturesque valley trenched by the Vyžuona stream meanders and the array of greenery. This aspect has led to the introduction of a dark green colour to the facade thus partially masking the large-scale building volume in the environment. The intrigue for a new building is created by the main facade shifted at an angle towards the street axis. Volume composition is created in two layers: a higher and tighter “box” – core of sports hall is covered by a lower one and curved perimeter block of staircases and galleries. This is also pointed up in colour solutions of facades: curvy part is highlighted by dark green profiled metal finishing and activated by vertical stripes of windows and gray pilasters. “Box” part is neutralized by gray colour, leaving it without split and other means of expression. Twist of gray and green colours additionally links separate parts of the building compositionally. The main entrance to the building is underscored by deepening of facade and a round column with capital.
