Apartment Building in Vilnius
Architects:
Rolandas Palekas, Bartas Puzonas, Aidas BarzdaAbout object:
This apartment building is unique by its place: although it is in the region close to a centre of Vilnius City – in Naujamiestis, but it is not surrounded by the bustle of the city, its residents enjoy quiet and cosy environment of a small remote street. The very house breathes with serenity and strength as well.
The three-storey building with a penthouse stands out for its original architecture among the residential houses massively constructed in the country. First of all, it is an interpretation of the regional architecture, search of modern architectural expression inspired by traditional Lithuanian ethnographic architectural forms and principles.
A pitched roof, volume proportions, façade finish reminiscent of dark grey chips is a clear allusion to the traditional prototype of home / cottage / stackyard. Incoherently arranged openings of windows and doors highlighted with a warm orange tint of natural wood add variety to the dark monolithic volume. All the elements carefully considered and implemented (irregular arrangement of windows in the façade, rejection of cornice) create unobtrusive and apparently modern image of the building.
According to the very authors, they tried to create the image of a cosy single family home, where people step down simply and easily from their bedroom to a kitchen for a cup of tea.
