Just like a true work of art, good architecture needs one specific touch to become an object for praise. It is what happened to new Kaunas Airport’s passenger terminal designed by G. Natkevičius, J. Skalskytė, M. Mickevičius and G. Čepurna. The project’s authors chose a simple form making a curved glass “forehead” on the façade, decorating it with toned glass and winning a prize for it – the new Kaunas Airport’s terminal was recognised as the best public building in Kaunas district of the year.
Bearing in mind the purpose of the building, authors paid most attention to functional edifice’s simplicity, clearness of the façade and calm interior of natural materials. As far as the cosiness matters, light has become one of the main aspects of the building’s grace, transparency and calmness.
Kaunas Airport’s terminal is harmonious and subtle: simple materials used for exterior and interior decorations, such as combination of concrete and steel, as if erase limits between the outside and the inside. Transparent decorations of wire net add to the functional, industrial design and give the impression of aesthetic clearness; more so that it also performs the function of protection against the solar heat. The façade is also smartened up by passenger arrival and departure “sleeves” which become the main elements of the façade’s composition.
Someone has said correctly that the more information is given, the less meaning it carries. This object confirms that simple truth speaking for itself in the language of a pause and leaving space for a calm waiting.
