The architectural solution of VGTU scientific and administrative centre in “Saulėtekis” (Eng. Sunrise) Valley in Vilnius is based on an ambition to create an image of a dominant, central building in the present context of VGTU studies complex. The composition of the building volumetric-spatial was dictated by the urban situation – “Saulėtekis“ trail and the space for the prospective “Saulėtekis” square, which in the future will become the media organically integrating all parts of the complex and the location for main entrances to the central building. So it is natural that the main facade of the new complex is adjoining in parallel with these important communication arteries of the university campus.
7,600 sq m building volume – a spatial composition consists of three main elements: a 1,000-seat transformable conference-type hall and two intertwined steep-angled administrative blocks set over the ground floor stylobate. The new complex with the old university blocks is connected by the gallery designed on the second floor. The most intriguing and complicated part of the scientific and administrative centre constructionally-wise is 15 m wide and 22 m high arch crowning the main entrance to the conference hall.
The architectural solution of VGTU scientific and administrative centre was consciously not attuned to the surrounding blocks of the university. An expressive arch formed in the junction of the administrative blocks is highlighted minimally. By employing combinations of composite panels, glass and metal finish, the designers aimed to create and were more focused on the image of a technical and advanced educational institution.
